Axel, the nephew of Professor Otto Liddenbrock, was surprised when his uncle came home early ranting about a 300 year old authentic Icelandic manuscript, but when a cryptograph is found in its pages his uncle will not eat, sleep or rest until it is solved while forcing his household to do the same. Then Axel discovers the cryptograph's secret but is determined to keep it from his uncle. But hunger can weaken a man's will and Axel finally gives in and tells his secret. His uncle is thrilled and immediately they prepare to set out for Iceland. There they are joined by Hans, a quiet Icelander that would be their guide, and together they set out for their final destination; the center of the earth and fame.
