Summary: This book was about how the Declaration of Independence came to be. It begins with the Pilgrims coming to America and being independent. The next part tells about how the 13 English colonies survived on their own, with out the help of Brittan. The colonies where almost completely independent. But after a 10-year-long war with France, Brittan needed money to pay its soldiers. So they put a tax on all imported goods and only let the colonies buy from Brittan. This made the colonists angry. They smuggled goods from other countries. British soldiers started invading people’s privacy looking for smuggled goods. This created tension in the colonies and fighting started to brake out in the colonies. Finally the war started. Leaders from 12 colonies met in the September of 1774 to discuses what to do. This was the First Continental Congress. They put George Washington in charge of the army. During the Second Continental Congress John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman were chosen to work on the declaration. They chose Thomas Jefferson to write the declaration. It was signed on July 4, 1776
