Tuesday, February 17, 2004 The Gnome, The Sword, and The Magic Gem
Once upon a time there lived a friendly gnome named Seamore. He was a mining gnome that never thought about war and killing. Most of his relatives were very different. His father, his father's father, and his father's father's father, were from a long line of great warriors. They passed down one sword to each of their first sons. It had ended up with him. He only had touched the thing twice, because it echoed too much of death and despair. The first time he had held it in his hands was when his father had given it to him when he was five (That's ten in human years). _____ . His grandfather had told him that the sword had magical powers, but the only things that Seamore saw it had was dust and cobwebs. He did not dust it because he feared he might transfer the death and despair to his dusting tools, (or that's what he told himself).
Finally he decided to go to his mine. He grabbed his pick and set off. After five minutes of walking he reached the mining site. He greeted his friend, John, who was already working. He took three swings at the dirt and ... clank! Both Seamore and John jumped at the sound.
"What was that?", John asked.
"I have no idea", Seamore replied. "But I'm going to find out." He began digging with both hands around the small object. Soon a glittering violet jewel fell from the gravel. John cheered loudly. The reason they had started this mine was for something like this.
"Lets go sell it," John exclaimed as he did a little dance. "HELLO MONEY!"
"What do you mean sell it?" Seamore asked.
"Sell what?" another voice asked.
The friends looked over at the cave entrence and saw another gnome. This one was a female and she looked them in a way that reminded Seamore of a magic picture show (Sort of like a 3-D movie) he had seen. The "Look" made him shudder. He couldn't think of what the look ment. While this thought process was going on he was trying to put the jewel in his back pocket. He almost suceeded when it slipped from his fingers and fell to the ground. John tried to step over to help hide the jewel but it was too late. She had already seen it.
What's that?", she asked pointing to Seamore's foot.
"Oh! That's my foot", Seamore said sarcastically. John started chuckling nervously. The girl put her hands on her hips and said, "No, I was talking about the thing behind it."
Seamore thought to himself, "Are we in trouble?" She started to walk over to them.
John walked in front of her and said forcefully, "You can't just walk in here as if you own the place. We own this place."
"Did you buy this land?" she replied.
"No", Seamore confessed. They had just found this place in the woods.
"Well I bought this land and your dirt heap is on it. Really it is considered my cave because it is on my land." She started, "But I have an idea. How about you give me whatever you have there and I'll let you stay."
"No way!" Seamore said angerly causing a small mound of dirt to fall from the wall. "We worked a long time to find this jewel!"
"Oh, so that's what it is." She said with a smirk. "In that case I'll just take it."
Seamore looked at her in disbelief and asked, "Are you serious!"
She nodded.
Seamore continued, "You are really serious?"
John turned toward her and walked closer and asked, "Are you doing anything on Sunday?"
"Are you asking me out?" she asked incredulously.
He stepped back a pace and replied, "No, but maybe we all could get together there and talk this over."
"O.K.", she said looking satisfied. "How about 12:00 noon at the Wizard's Cafe? We can talk there."
"Sure", Seamore replied. "But we get to hold onto this."
"Are you crazy?" John asked.
Seamore answered, "No, but I found this jewel and it's my decision." He stuck out his hand and she hesitated, but then shook it. (After she hastily wiped in on a handkerchief.) Ignoring the look on Seamore's and John's faces she added, "By the way, my name is Amy." She walked away without saying good bye.
"Do you think we should go?" John asked.
"Yes, I think we should." replied Seamore.
